Athalia – it sounds like you are still in the running, and they’re putting together the offer. Hard to know what she means by “fine tuning the compensation plan” – which could mean budget has changed and they’re figuring out how to afford you (assuming you talked salary requirements). More likely, they’re working on the mix of salary and benefits. There is a lot of red tape involved with government positions, so this isn’t surprising – it can take weeks sometimes, even in the non-government sectors. I would say your chances for an offer still look good, and I advise staying in close touch with your contact there as they move through the process. If you haven’t heard by middle of next week, you could check back in, and see if they can give you a more concrete timeline.

Thank you. I actually lost hope a two weeks ago on this position and was positively excited to hear from them this week. I hope so. Thank you again, I have been struggling to find work for a year now.

Hi Dana, I actually completed two interviews at a company 4 weeks ago…The Manager informed me I was in the running but that they have an extensive background check (since it is a government corporation). Since the last interview (in late August) the Manage and I have been in contact but still no offer. This week she emailed me different news that she wanted to let me know “we are stilling fine tuning the compensation plan and I did not want to bring anyone on board until that was finalized”, and she should know by next week. does that mean I may still be given a job offer?

Hi Dana, thank you for your sharing. I’ve got a phone screen with the hiring manager on Friday, he actually just asked me some simple information such as my qualifications, my expected salary, my knowledge about the company, nothing more. Then he told me that he would like to have an interview with me next week, maybe next Friday via Skype properly. I think the phone screen wasn’t as good as what I expected, but because he said so, I keep hope. So far I still haven’t heard about the next interview. I wonder if are there anyways a hiring manager said so to please me and then just rejected me?
